If you live and work in Thailand and plan to ride a motorcycle or drive a car, you’ll need a Thai driver’s licence (DL). While the process isn’t difficult, it involves many details, steps, and documents that are easy to misunderstand or overlook.
This step-by-step guide will help you navigate that process with ease and avoid any waste of time or unforeseen surprises.
Who needs a Thai Driver’s License?
Short-term tourists are usually not eligible for a Thai DL, but are required to present an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a motorbike or car.
Digital nomads or long-term tourists are recommended to apply for a Thai DL to avoid issues with traffic police.
Expats and Non-immigrant visa holders are required to have a Thai DL if they plan to drive in Thailand at any time. The license also provides general identification and has benefits such as insurance applications, entry to venues, and more. It is almost as good as carrying your passport.
The process
Step 1: Decide if you want to apply for a car license or a motorbike license. They are separate and are treated as such.
Step 2a: Do you have a valid IDP or local license from your home country? You can apply for a license conversion rather than applying for a completely new one.
Step 2b: If you do not have a local license or IDP, then you have to apply for a new Thai DL.
Step 3: Collect all required documents. See the required documents section below.
Step 4: Book your appointment with the Department of Land Transport (DLT). Here’s how:
- Download “DLT Smart Queue” from the App Store or Google Play.
- Register with your details.
- Select the branch you want to apply for the license nearest to you. Some branches can be super busy, and you may have to wait weeks for your slot. If you cannot wait, look for smaller branches around you as they are usually less busy but also less foreigner-friendly.
- Select the type of service (new license/conversion/renewal) and license type (motorcycle/car) that you want to apply for.
- Pick the date you want to visit the DLT branch.
- You may also have to watch a video to complete your appointment
Step 5: Arrive at the DLT early with ALL required documents in hand.
Step 6: Show your documents and screenshot of the appointment at the counter.
Step 7: Follow the process, which includes watching a traffic safety video and completing a multiple-choice theory test, a driving test, and a series of physical tests. If you fail any, you may have to do it all over again. The process and layout vary slightly depending on the branch.
Step 8: Pay the fee, have your photo and fingerprints taken, and collect your printed licence on the day.
Make sure you check with your local DLT branch about specific requirements, as they vary slightly. You may find more information on www.dlt.go.th/en
If you are worried about the tests, it is recommended to get training or courses at a certified driving school in your city. You can also take this simulation test for practice.
Required Documents for New Licence
Gathering all the requirements is extremely important in applying for anything in Thailand, and a driver’s license is no different. This is everything you will need:
- Passport and 2 sets of signed copies of all pages, including the visa

- Original Certificate of Residence issued by your embassy or Thai immigration or work permit (with present address identified), original and photocopy
- Medical certificate issued within 30 days of your DLT appointment
- 2 Passport-sized photos – some require; better to have in case
- Appointment confirmation
- Training or e-learning certificate, if required
Note: First-time Thai driver’s license is valid for 2 years. To renew the license, the process is similar but slightly simpler. Visit how to renew a Thai driving license for more information.
The cost

- Certificate of Residence: 500 – 3000 THB depending on the embassy

Total: ฿1,000 – ฿4,000
Hire an agency to help
To avoid any hassles or taking multiple trips, there are agencies and legal service providers in Thailand who assist foreigners with obtaining, renewing, or converting licenses.
Here are a few popular driving license service providers in Thailand:
Thai Driving License Service for Foreigners (TDLS): a trusted service provider assisting foreigners all over Thailand with new applications, foreign licence conversions, and renewals. Their fluent, English-speaking team helps prepare and guide applicants through the DLT process.
PT Services Agency: Provides full-service assistance packages for license processing, test arrangements, and renewals.
Easy Thai Driving License – They provide convenient services ranging from new licence applications and renewals to converting foreign driving licences, and can also assist with obtaining a Certificate of Residence.
The cost of hiring an agency depends entirely on what level of services they provide. It can range anywhere between 2500 THB for basic to 15000 THB for premium and express services. While it can seem quite expensive, it takes all the stress and worry off your shoulders.
⚠️ Important note: Beware of Driving Licence Service Scams
Several fraudulent websites and social media pages claim they can arrange a Thai driving licence entirely online or without requiring you to visit the Department of Land Transport. These claims are false. Thai driving licences can only be issued in person at an official DLT office.
They will also lure you with other benefits or cheap alternatives. Watch out for suspicious claims or offers.
